Threshing Oar Kennel, located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, is dedicated to maintaining ethical breeding standards and responsible pet ownership. We join a global community of owners, handlers, and preservation breeders whose efforts ensure rare and ancient breeds like Norwegian Lundehunds thrive for generations to come.

I learned about Norwegian Lundehunds in 2011, the year the American Kennel Club recognized the breed. As a yoga instructor, the dog’s extreme flexibility intrigued me. Years later, my interest in the breed shifted to preservation. I welcomed my first Lundie in spring 2022 and a second later that year.

I’ve shared my life with many canine companions—big and small, purebreds, mixed breeds, and rescues—but can attest Lundehunds are like no other dog on earth. They have a foxy appearance, drape in your arms like a cat, and their extra toes (they’re fully functional toes, not dangling dewclaws) allow for remarkable feats like untying a shoelace.

“Threshing oar” is a nod to Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song. The lyrics describe Vikings sailing west to new lands and seemed apropos as Lundehunds, greatly valued by the Vikings, arrived on North America’s shores centuries later.
